1.
In a sound wave travelling through air, which of the following terms refers to the region where particles are densely packed together, resulting in high pressure and high density?
Show answer and explanation

Answer: (C)

Compression

In a longitudinal sound wave, a compression is the region where particles are crowded together, giving high pressure and density. A rarefaction is the low-pressure region.
2.
Why do noble gases exist as gases at room temperature, whereas halogens exist as solids, liquids or gases going down the group?
Show answer and explanation

Answer: (D)

Noble gases have weak intermolecular forces

Noble gases are monatomic with only weak van der Waals forces between atoms, so they stay gaseous. Halogen molecules grow larger down the group, so their intermolecular forces strengthen.
