त्वचा की बाहरी परत स्तरित शल्की उपकला है, जिसकी कोशिकाएँ घिसाव से बचाने हेतु कई परतों में होती हैं। आँत और वृक्क नलिकाओं में स्तंभाकार व घनाकार उपकला होती है।
The skin's outer layer is stratified squamous epithelium, with cells arranged in many layers to prevent wear and tear. Intestine and kidney tubules have columnar and cuboidal epithelium.

दृढ़ोतक (स्क्लेरेनकाइमा) की कोशिकाएँ मृत व लिग्निनयुक्त होती हैं और मजबूती देती हैं; यह संवहन बंडलों के चारों ओर, पत्ती की शिराओं तथा बीजों-फलों के कठोर आवरण (जैसे नारियल का छिलका) में होता है।
Sclerenchyma has dead, lignified cells that give strength; it is found around vascular bundles, in leaf veins and in hard coverings of seeds and nuts (e.g. coconut husk).
