Selection stages

CBT 1 — First stage (screening)

Common paper for every NTPC post: Maths, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness. It is qualifying only — the score itself is not carried into the final merit — but only a fixed multiple of vacancies per community (usually around 20x) is shortlisted for CBT 2, so a strong CBT 1 rank still matters.

CBT 2 — Second stage (decides merit)

Post-specific paper, tougher than CBT 1. This score is what actually feeds the next stage and the final merit.

Typing Skill Test / CBAT

Clerk-cum-Typist type posts require a qualifying Typing Skill Test; Station Master type posts instead sit a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT).

Document Verification (DV) & Medical

Original documents are checked, followed by a railway medical fitness exam as per the post's standards — final appointment comes only after this.
